Introduction: Luna Gomez grew up in a home that was traumatized by the tragic loss of her older sister, Alma, at age nine. The unresolved grief of Luna’s parents has informed Luna’s world-view and orientation. This play seeks to explore her struggle with those issues in the context of her Mexican American family. Even after death, Alma has had a presence in Luna’s life…like an invisible friend which may be perceived as a delusion or an actual spiritual presence. (For most of the play, only Luna and the audience can see and hear Alma’s ghost.) The history and the need of a young adult to resolve a circumstance of family grief are central to the truth of the production.
Characters:

Luna Gomez – A young woman in her early 20s

Maria Gomez de Navarro – Luna’s mother, a university professor, born in California
Francisco Gomez – Luna’s father, a mechanic, born in Mexico
Abuelita, Irma Gomez de Duarte – Luna’s paternal grandmother

Notes regarding the set and lighting: The upstage area is dedicated to Luna in conversation with the audience. Alma, her sister/ghost will at times choose to join Luna on the stage as she addresses the audience. At times they may speak to each other. At other times they will simply be together as Luna struggles with her past and Alma seeks to protect or to enjoy her sister. Some of these encounters may be improvised and explored by the creative team. Alma’s ghostly presence is enhanced by her dance-like flitting about and by the shimmering light that surrounds her. Other stage areas for the production should include: Rachel’s therapy office, the household kitchen table, a bedroom (for Young Luna and for Alma’s room when lit properly), a porch swing, a church space, a multipurpose space for Quincenera dancing etc. Use of lighting, projection and simplicity or complexity of design are the province of the creative team.
Act 1.
(While the house lights are on as the audience is seated, music is playing. Alma’s ghost flits around the room. She is followed by a light that causes her to shimmer. She comments as she sees audience members, but for the most part is unsure and not responsive to them.)
ALMA
(These phrases are examples. Some improvisation is acceptable.)
Look at how beautiful you are… Mira! …You can see me? … This place is magic… I’m nine, how old are you? … Don’t tell… Shhh… Luna is home… My Luna… Shhh… (The shimmering light fades on Alma. House lights go down. The music continues for a few moments. Then there are five beats of quiet.)
